November Roundup: Oh the weather outside is frightful…

Here’s our list of things that happened in November. Maybe checked twice:

1. Gabbler Recommended things as usual. Like Aziz Ansari’s new Netflix series Master of None.

2. We started reading My Fair Ladies by Julie Wosk. Here’s a quote from it.

3. And, as always, we sifted through our many tweets to bring you only the best for our Tweets of the Week under the Social Medea category/gear, like these little bird songs about nothing.

Horrific Holidays!

GABBLER RECOMMENDS: You’re the Worst – Season 2

A few months back, I recommended season 1 of You’re the Worst. This second season was just as good.

Reviewers keep talking about how “It’s not just about being an anti-RomCom anymore! The depression story line is so progressive!”

But this overlooks what makes that story line work; it has a tight plot, well-written characters, and, most of all, grace when dealing with horrible subject matter (or, just horrible people). It’s just good TV.

Instead of focusing on how well they handled Gretchen’s depression, I want to focus on how truthful the entire story is. No character is entirely without fault, yet you end up loving each one AND their faults.

Watch it.

Alan Moore on the publishing industry:

Some of his advice is pretty standard: write every day, be self-critical, don’t worry about money when composing. But Moore also breaks out of the old adages and is frank about the publishing world as he perceives it, pointing out that many of the “famous, well-known” authors out there “have nothing to do with writing,” casting shade on popular works like Dan Brown’s and calling the industry a “mess.” So what’s a hungry writer to do? Self-publish, sayeth the wizard:

“Publishing today is a complete mess. I know brilliant authors who can’t get their books published,” Moore says, explaining that many publishing houses are afraid of taking risks on fiction. Moore’s solution? “Publish yourself. Don’t rely upon other people.”

It’s rare and refreshing for an established writer to promote the potential boons of self-publishing and be honest about their perception of what lies behind the industry curtain. Of course, we expect some eccentricity from Moore, but we prefer this earnest truth-telling over the grumpy old manperformances he’s given more recently. The video was recorded in 2011, which means we may be in need of a time-turning spell. More of this old Moore, please.

#BLAThoughtOfTheDay: If I had to pick one GIF to represent the relationship between THE AUTOMATION characters Dorian Dandor and Mecca Makepeace…

This would be it.
